A former journalist turned digital media and communications leader, commercial strategist and policy professional, James Watkins is currently completing a Master of Public Policy degree at LSE.

Results-Driven Marketing Leader

James led one of The Economist’s annual strategic pillars, driving £18m in incremental annual revenue.

He built the global in-house growth team at BBC Studios, helping its BritBox SVOD service surpass 3 million subscribers across 7 countries, despite industry-wide streaming slowdown.

Commercial Strategy and Executive Support

James has supported C-suite decision makers at 3 global media brands, leading special projects, preparing Board documents and providing strategic advice.

He has owned 8-figure annual budgets, driving project and programme delivery in commercially critical areas, and supported organisational transformation projects.

Impact-Focused Digital Content Leader

James was the lead producer of OZY Fest 2021, a virtual festival featuring 51 headliners such as Malcolm Gladwell and Revd. Al Sharpton, in partnership with UNCF to support Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

He also led marketing for Emmy-winning Black Women OWN the Conversation, which aired on the Oprah Winfrey Network, fostering discourse about issues impacting women of color.

Accomplished Writer, Reporter & Content Creator

In 2018, James led Around the World, a Pulitzer-nominated global reporting project for OZY that visited every country on earth. He was previously Editor-in-Chief of the Harvard International Review.

His reporting has covered 19 countries including the US, the UK, Kyrgyzstan, Panama, Lesotho, and the Netherlands — as well as covering the 2016 U.S. presidential election from the only Black church in America to have endorsed Donald Trump.

His work has been featured by Fortune, the Aspen Institute, Cheddar, RealClearMarkets, Politico, the Global Investigative Journalism Network, Nieman Lab, iHeartRadio, the Global Warming Policy Forum and more.
